Summer School Classes for Sixth Grade to High School
Students will choose four classes from the list below.
1. Cooking According to the Liturgical Calendar
"By the Lord's decision they were distinguished, and He appointed the different seasons and feasts;" Ecclesiasticus 33:8-9
In this class, students will cook several recipes from the Church's three most important cycles: Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost. Students will not only learn new recipes that can be incorporated into their celebration of these feasts, but also the rich Catholic tradition behind the meals.
2. Study on Marian Apparitions
In this class, students will learn the difference between public revelation and private revelation, as well as the Church's process in determining authentic apparitions. Students will then dive into the approved apparitions of Our Lady throughout the Church's history and all over the world. There will be a special emphasis on Our Lady of Good Success, Our Lady of Fatima, and Our Lady of Tre Fontane and the constant, uniform message of Our Lady calling her children to prayer and penance.
3. Survival & Outdoor Skills
4. Study of Insects
In the Book of Insects, students will learn distinguishing characteristics for eight orders of insects and gain an appreciation for God as they study His diverse creation among insects.
5. Introduction to Scripture Studies (book fee)
In this class, students will learn about the history of the inerrant Word of God, how the Sacred Scriptures have been translated and passed down, its various translations, and the many attacks by Luther and other Protestants.
6. The Fellowship of the Ring and its Catholic Themes (book fee)
7. Foundations Restored - A Catholic Perspective on Origins of Life and Evolution ($50 for parents who would like to join)
Are Catholics free to believe in the theory of evolution? What do Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, the Magisterium of the Church, and the Church Fathers say regarding the topic of evolution? Students will evaluate whether the theory of evolution is justified based on Church teachings, scientific evidence, and Thomistic philosophy.
8. Study on Papal Encyclicals (book fee)
In this class, students will be introduced to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, her two modes of teaching the faithful, and the various documents the Church uses to explain and develop the faith. Students will then go through papal encyclicals, that while written in the 19th century, contain beautiful words of wisdom, and warnings, for us today.
9. Early Church History
Students will be introduced to the events, places, persons, controversies, and beliefs surrounding early Christianity from the days of Jesus of Nazareth’s advent upon Second Temple Judaism until the Christianized Roman Empire of the Fifth Century. Students will have an opportunity to read, reflect on, and analyze primary source documents from the earliest days of the Church as well as thorough, scholarly secondary sources. Students will be given the tools to teach others how the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church developed out of Apostolic Tradition, handed down by the faithful, and further defined not only by the most notable minds and hearts of the Church, but also in response to political and doctrinal controversy.
10. Catholic Apologetics
In this class, students will learn how to defend their Catholic Faith and the Church from common attacks levied against Her and put St. Peter's words of "being ready always to satisfy every one that asketh you a reason of that hope which is in you."
11. Film Storytelling Process (Creative Writing)
Students will be introduced to story structure and how every film operates to deliver an overall message. They will create character arcs based on their character's motivations and objectives. The final week will involve writing and performing a scene to present before the rest of the class.
12. Logic Puzzles & Problem Solving
13. Sewing
14. Math tutoring - Mrs. Barone
Students will use this time to work on any math concepts that need practice prior to entering the next grade level.
